About Gallery Rifles

The Gallery Rifle (GR) disciplines cover events shot at short and medium distances by various rifles and pistols. Many of the events are classified so competitors shoot against others of similar ability. Open meetings are held the National Shooting Centre, Bisley (NSC) and at club ranges around the country. Competitors can take part at all levels from club to international. The Gallery Rifle community is a friendly one and competitors of all levels of skill and experience are equally welcome. Never fall into the trap of thinking ‘I’m not good enough to shoot at Bisley’ – it’s there for everyone to come and join in and enjoy.

The Firearms

Gallery Rifle Small Bore (GRSB)
Most competitors use a semi automatic .22 rifle. In some events it is possible to use pump action or single shot rifles.

Gallery Rifle Centre Fire (GRCF)
Most use a lever action rifle in a pistol calibre e.g. .38/.357 or .44. There are also other rifles which use different designs.

Long Barrelled Pistol (LBP)
These are mostly semi automatic pistols in .22 with an overall minimum length of 60cm. Single shot pistols and revolvers can be used in some events.

Long Barrelled Revolver (LBR)
Revolvers in a variety of calibres, commonly .38/.357 or .44, with an overall minimum length of 60cm, are used,

The Events
The majority of events are shot at distances between 10m and 50m, with a few going out to 300yd. There is a large selection which only requires a range of 25m.

The most common position is standing but some events call for shooting kneeling, sitting or with the weak shoulder or hand. Some are deliberate precision events while some require the competitor to shoot and reload quite quickly. The targets can be stationary or turning at set intervals or even moving.

Open Meetings
Many clubs in the UK have a GR section and put on club competitions. Some of them also host open meetings at which competitors from all over the country come to gain valuable experience in shooting at different venues.

There are four open meetings at the NSC. These include the Phoenix Meeting in late May and the National Championships at the end of August. The Phoenix Meeting is the premier meeting in the year. It attracts over 500 competitors and has a very wide range of events on offer. The National Championships Meeting is a little smaller but also has the GR Home Countries National Match for teams from England, Scotland and Wales.

National and International
England, Scotland and Wales have GR teams. Squads are selected at the end of each year for the next year, based on performance in the year. The UK National Team is chosen annually in a similar way and represents the country in Europe.

Dear All, At last the makings of the barbecue summer and there is plenty of shooting going on as well: -

The 2010 Derby Open Gallery Rifle Match (Saturday/Sunday 26th/27th June) was graced by splendid summer weather throughout and attendance was excellent with nearly 400 match cards being submitted in 20 different events.  For the first time the events included the shotgun Timed and Precision One Match with 14 competitors taking part, and four of them achieving the excellence of a gold standard score.  On the main range some competitors blamed the hot weather for lead fouling in their barrels; did it really get that hot?  The excellent facilities at the Derby Ranges were neatly manicured and the well drilled range staff were friendly, helpful and managed to keep the shooters in line and the details on time.  This great weekend is one of the largest open classified events held outside the National Shooting Centre – well worth entering, further details and full scores available on www.drpc1999.com.

By the time you get this GR update the Imperial Meeting will be underway and there will be a report on the Imperial Pistol and Gallery Rifle Matches next time.  Also at time of writing the GB Gallery Rifle Team will be embarked for Ireland for the Fermoy International Gallery Rifle Match.  This year there are both centre-fire and small-bore international 1500 matches and GB Team captain, Ashley Dagger, will be taking an eight strong squad to enter teams in both matches.

Looking ahead Frome Pistol Club (www.fdpc.org.uk) have their annual 3-gun Practical Match over the weekend of 24th and 25th July, at Shield Shooting Centre in Dorset (www.shieldshootingcentre.co.uk).  There are stages for centre-fire gallery rifle (or LBR), small-bore gallery rifle (or LBP) and shotgun; which can be entered individually or you can have a go at all three.  This is a very popular date so get you entry in early.

Stourport Club in Worcestershire make a welcome return to the national match scene this year with their open classified 1500 Match plus shorts on Saturday/Sunday 7th/8th August.  In the past Stourport has offered unique 50 metre Timed and Precision and Multi-target Matches – quite a challenge.  Entry forms will be available on www.galleryrifle.com soon as will details of all forthcoming events.

On the subject of trying something different the fact that the gallery rifle community want a dynamic sport is encouraging and the NRA Gallery Rifle Sub-Committee have discussed options for new events at recent meetings.  The feeling is that the more challenging events including 50 metre stages would be welcomed – let me know what you think and I will feedback to the Sub-Committee.

So there is plenty to do and no excuse for not keeping busy until the National Championships at Bisley over the August Bank Holiday weekend.  However don’t use up all your ammunition as all entry methods for the Nationals will be available on www.nra.org.uk late next week and if you aspire to hold the title of National Champion in your favourite event this is your opportunity – see you there!

Good shooting and good luck!
